Motoclub Bañezano
Who doesn't know it???? Well, neither did I. Until..... I got a set postal stationery from this club in my hands.
La Bañezano is a municipality in the south of the province Léon, Spain. After the World Championship for motorcycles was established in 1949, the desire to organize a GP grew in a lot of places. Also in Bañezano. A group of notables came together and started the Motoclub de Bañezano. Because there were as good as no permanent circuits in Europe in those days, they converted their village roads into a circuit.
The circuit of Bañezano
In 1954 the first WC-GP was riden straight across La Bañezano. With interruptions several GP's were held over the next years, what could be celebrated with the 50th GP in 2009. In the first years only 125cc races were allowed in the streets, sometimes extended with moped races. From 1970 on the 250cc class was added and when the event got the classic status in the 90-ies also heavier machines were allowed to participate in the regularity races. Nowadays famous names like Hernandez, the Villar brothers, Phil Read, Martín and Ago participate.
A famous regional hero was
Ángel Nieto who was often present on the circuit in his early years. In 1968 Ángel won his first GP in Bañezano. As regional hero a set of postal stationery consisting of 3 cards has been dedicated to him in collaboration with Correos (Spanish Post) during the 50th GP. One postcard in unlimited edition, one with a maximum of 1000 pieces and one card in an edition of 500, on which Ángel himself should have written a text.
