In 1877 the family owned business opened its first rubber factory in Liège. Here a very wide range of articles made from this material originated, amongst others dolls, shoes and transport belts for the mining industry, which even ended in coal mines in the distant Congo. In 1894 the Engleberts started to experiment with tyres, which in the beginning were intended for bicycles and horse carriages. In 1898 their company produced the first bicycle tyres and not long after that also the first car and motorcycle tyres. Therewith it became the first tyre producer in the Benelux and one of the pioneers in this business in Europe.
In 1958 the Engleberts merged with the American company US Rubber. With this they became the largest but two tyre manufacturer of the world. The brand Uniroyal-Englebert was born. In 1967 the name was definitively changed into Uniroyal. In 1979 the company Uniroyal was taken over by Continental AG.
